Designing Out Waste - with Zero Waste Scotland

A 2 hour workshop on the principles and practice of designing in circularity and how to design out waste looking at construction as an example of a key sector.

A 2 hour workshop on the principles and practice of designing out waste, and designing in circularity.

What is the workshop about?

SBCC members are invited to this 'Designing Out Waste' workshop, run by Zero Waste Scotland in partnership with the Supply Chain Sustainability School. It includes the opportunity for detailed discussions and interaction around producing practical solutions to reduce waste.

The aim is to tackle waste at the earliest project stage and prevent unnecessary waste being generated through a project’s lifetime.

The session will also include a focus on the construction sector which is one of the key value chains with the highest potential for circular growth. Discover how businesses are working in practice and find out about Zero Waste Scotland's new resource link for Reducing Construction Lifecycle Waste.  This is a dynamic series of practically focused resources in a logical way for users to find and act upon.

What will I achieve?

  • Understand Designing Out Waste (DoW) key principles and main interventions – and how they can help reduce environmental impact of construction at every stage of the build project; from design, to procurement through to end of life deconstruction.
  • Understand how DoW will make the best use of materials, water and energy during construction and over the lifecycle of built assets.
  • Understand how embedding resource efficiency practices and circular economy principles will help to reduce materials use, waste, and reduce overall construction costs.
  • Learn about Zero Waste Scotland’s strategic support with a focus on the construction sector in Scotland as an example of a sector seeking to reduce waste and carbon.
  • Appreciate the significant opportunities at the early design stages to Design out Waste (DoW) which can: reduce construction costs, material use and waste and minimise carbon.
  • Articulate the principles of the Circular Economy
  • Apply  DoW principles to a current project
  • Appreciate the legal compliance imperatives for effective management and reduction of waste looking at construction materials.

What level is the session, and do I need any particular skills?

This is a practical, interactive training session, relevant to small and medium sized enterprises in Scotland who are interested in finding out how one sector is developing circular approaches. Relevant across sustainability, procurement and project teams, suppliers, manufacturers, contractors, sub-contractors and designers.
